For most racing fans, a Benchmark 68 victory might not turn heads but for the owners of Royal Fox, his triumph at Morphettville felt like winning a Group 1.
The six-year-old gelding, picked up for just $8,000 at the 2024 Inglis Late November Sale, rewarded his connections in style, picking up $30,000 in prize money and delivering an unforgettable moment for his large group of owners.
With around 30 owners in the horse; and many of them first-time owners, there was a sense of excitement and belief heading into race day. “It was the first time we went to the races feeling bullish that today could be the day,” owner and Racing.com host James Tzaferis shared.
That belief was reflected in the turnout on track, with nearly half of the ownership group on course, including several who travelled from Melbourne to witness what they hoped would be a special moment.
“I’m just so glad for them and so grateful for the owners who jumped on board and good to see their faith repaid,” Tzaferis said.
For trainer Jess and James, Royal Fox is more than just a racehorse. It was the horse that gave Jess her first win as a trainer and a horse that will always provide special memories. “We bought the horse as a wedding present to ourselves and purchased him on our honeymoon.”
Now, with a victory under his belt and hopefully more to come, Royal Fox will hopefully be a gift that keeps on giving.
