Ownership Costs
Owning a thoroughbred racehorse in Australia comes with a range of costs, both ongoing and occasional. Here’s what you can typically expect to be billed for:
Ongoing Costs
- Agistment – If your horse isn’t in training, you’ll pay for spelling (resting) at a farm, usually charged weekly.
- Training Fees – Charged by the trainer, covering daily care, feeding, exercise, and stable management.
- Track Fees – Fees for using racecourse facilities during training.
- Farrier Costs – Regular shoeing and hoof care (usually every 4–6 weeks).
- Vet Bills – Routine care like vaccinations, worming, and general check-ups.
- Race Nominations & Acceptances – Entry fees for races, varying by race class and location.
- Jockey Fees – Set fees per race, plus a percentage of prize money if the horse wins or places.
- Transport – Costs to float (transport) your horse to and from races, trials, or spelling farms.
- Insurance (Optional) – Cover for injury, mortality, or loss of use.
- Admin & Syndication Fees – If you own the horse in a syndicate, there may be management or admin costs.
Costs fluctuate depending on the horse's training stage, location, and level of racing.
